Contemplating the Rebirth of Conservatism While Abroad

Apparently since I've been gone, some worries I had before Obama's win apparently have not gone to rest and instead horrible rumors continue to be spread throughout the U.S. In addition to this "birther" community that questions if our President was born in the United States, it seems Obama is going through hell for fighting for what most people in the world argue as a basic right, the right to health care. It's funny to explain this "heated debate" to locals here in Egypt, the educated Cairenes don't understand why Americans are up in arms with their leader for proposing reform when 48 million Americans are uninsured (including myself). I try to explain the priority we Americans place on political and legal rights rather than on social and economic rights, but I then ask myself why this is so.

In addition to Obama being painted as a socialist and communist (because of course the 2 are equivalent!), there are so-called American leaders like Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) who get lionized for screaming out "You lie!" at Obama during the President's address to Congress. Wilson in turn raises $200,000 in 2 days for his election campaign.

Check out this LA Times article about the rise of fringe conservatives.
