Back to the US, Back to Blogging - What's Going On in the World?

Hey everyone -

It's been awhile, Cairo was overwhelming for sure. I'm back in the US, and thought I would share relevant and important pieces of news that we should watch. In between the Gulf Oil spill, Gaza flotillas, the World Cup and constant depressing news about the economic demise of everyone and every nation, I figure there are some news that are going undetected/under-discussed. Just some of the world/US issues that I think are important:

Barcelona is the first Spanish city to ban the burka. Meanwhile, Muslim veiled women in the US discuss why they choose to wear the niqab (ie it's "liberating").

As President Obama seeks to seize the moment while the horrible oil spill continues to pass a Clean Energy bill on climate change, some of us wonder what our Senators and Congressmen are doing for climate change?

Although dirt poor, Rwanda can proudly boast a 92% coverage rate for health insurance for its people.

Forbes grades the Obama Administration on its progress and support for women's rights issues.

Afghans are excited about the US discovering potentially $1 trillion worth of mineral deposits, possibly making Afghanistan the future Saudi Arabia for lithium. Perhaps China is also excited?

FBI released more than 2,200 pages of files on the late Teddy Kennedy, revealing that like his brothers, he too had received numerous death threats in his life.

A reminder during the World Cup frenzy that South Africa still needs help in its path towards reconciliation in a post-apartheid state.

"Oddly" President Barack Obama is still unpopular in former slave states. Surprised?

After Khaled El Said, a young Egyptian man from Alexandria, was beaten to death by Egyptian police in an internet cafe last week, massive protesting and rioting has been going in near my former home in downtown Cairo and in Alexandria.

The US Supreme Court will decide soon on the constitutionality of Chicago's 28-year controversial handgun ban.

While of course not 100% comprehensive, that's all I got for you today folks. Watch out for the next update on what's going on in the US and in the world soon.

  1. do you think it's odd that al gore has remained pretty much silent about the oil spill, when normally he's very vocal about environmental issues?

  2. FYI on Gore & the oil spill: http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/the-crisis-comes-ashore

but I think Gore is going through some personal issues as he splits from his 40 year marriage with Tipper and his daughter looks like she's also about to go through divorce. family trumps all right now.
